- Before brackets are published, athletes will be organised into preliminary groupings on the Wednesday prior to the competition.
- We group athletes together in order to minimise the amount of athletes who are alone in a division, and therefore do not have matches. We need to credit athletes who have no matches.
- Athletes in divisions with at least 3 athletes in them will not be merged elsewhere.Β
- Divisions with only 1 athlete in them will be merged up when possible, according to our Merge policy (covered below).
- We may merge 2-athlete divisions if we deem it necessary, in order to provide other athletes with matches.

- In the groupings email, we will ask athletes who are still alone in a division to check the divisions list and advise us if you see a division that you'd like us to merge you into.
- We do not accept requests to merge athletes down a division, which would make them older, heavier, or more skilled than the rest of the division.
- Additionally, if the merge request will result in another athlete being left alone in a division (this would be the case if they were originally in a 2-athlete division), we will not proceed with it.

- Brackets of only 2 people are best of three - whoever wins 2 out of 3 matches, wins the bracket, regardless of the method of victory in the matches. It is best of three, not best to three.
- Divisions of more than two athletes and less than 8 people are in a round robin format, with a 4 match-maximum per athlete.
- Divisions of 8 or more athletes are fought in a 2-pool, round robin bracket.
- The bracket is split into 2 pools and conducted under our traditional 4-match maximum round robin format.
- The winners from each pool will fight in the finals, and the second-place athletes from each pool will fight for bronze.
- Absolute divisions are single-elimination - you lose, youβre out.

- Winning a match will earn athletes a certain number of points towards the bracket, depending on the win method (outlined below). Once all of a bracketβs matches are finished, Smoothcomp will rank the athletes based on points.
- When the bracket is finished, the top 3 athletes will be awarded gold, silver, and bronze respectively.
- Submission wins score 5 points, Points and Decision wins score 2 points, and Draw, DQ, and Walkover wins score 1 point.
- The exception to this scoring are the best of three brackets, as stated previously. Unfortunately Smoothcomp doesnβt allow us to set up these match points for best of three brackets.
- If the number of submission wins are tied, Smoothcomp will work through the below tiebreaker criteria:
- Result if the athletes went head to head (e.g. Athlete A and Athlete B both have 6 points each, but Athlete A beats Athlete B in their match, then Athlete A wins).
- Fastest submission
- Shortest amount of time in won matches

- Because of the round robin format, teammates might end up being matched against one another. We've configured Smoothcomp to avoid this when possible, but depending on the number of competitors or teammates in a division, there might be no way to prevent it.Β
- The absolute division will be bracketed automatically via Smoothcomp as will the regular weight divisions, however if the top 1 and 2 seeds have been pre-determined by the Event Manager, they will be placed on opposite sides of the bracket.
- No requests to redraw the bracket in order to avoid fighting teammates or to provide you with a better chance of winning will be accepted.
- Closeouts are not permitted (rigging a match with a teammate). If a closeout occurs, the referee will call a double DQ.

- The Stealth format prioritises submission attempts over positional control.
- Obviously, if one athlete submits the other at any point during the match, the match will end and they will be declared the winner.
- For each genuine submission threat a competitor makes, they will be awarded 1 point by the referee.
- If there is no submission during the match, the athlete with the most points at the end of the match will be declared the winner by points.
- If at the end of the match the points are tied, the match will be declared a draw.

TECHNIQUE CLARIFICATIONS
- Athletes may pull guard without grips at any level.
- The techniques highlighted βNO-GI ONLYβ are also not permitted in Masters divisions.
- For all Kids matches, the referees may end the match at any time (including during legal submission attacks) in the interest of athlete safety.
- Kids matches will be stopped when a submission attempt is locked, before the attacking athlete has the chance to crank the submission.
- Single Hand Attacks to Throat include punch chokes and open hand chokes, but do not include No Gi Ezequiel Chokes.
- Standing guillotines are differentiated from a standing front headlock by the attacking competitor arching their back in an attempt to finish the submission.
- Straight ankle lock includes Pato lock and Caio Terra lock. The attacker is not allowed to position the defenderβs heel on their ribs/stomach when the foot is rotated inwards for an Aoki lock.
- For an attack to be considered a Jumping Guard/Flying Submission, both competitors must be standing.
- Standard Kneebar includes kneebars where the foot is placed into the attackerβs armpit for more power, and Cloverleaf style kneebars where
the kneebar is applied using the defenderβs secondary leg as a fulcrum. - A slam is defined as any motion where a competitor lifts the other up (whether it is while in a submission, from within the guard or during
a takedown), and holds them in mid-air for a brief pause before returning them to the ground in an uncontrolled fashion. Slams do not include controlled double leg takedowns where the attacker briefly lifts the defending athlete off the floor. Any form of intentional head/neck spiking is not allowed.
